Prof Anca Silvia Dumitriu addressing the conference
The Romanian Society of Periodontology recently held its twelfth national periodontology conference, which included lectures, scientific presentations, and a hands-on workshop to demonstrate practical skills.
The overall theme was “modern periodontology based on fundamental knowledge of medical practice.”
Topics covered during the lectures included the surgical treatment of gingival abnormalities, risk-factor assessment for periodontal disease, and the possibilities and limitations of alternative medicine in treating dental conditions. Speakers included Horia Traian Dumitriu, Stana Paunica, Cinel Maliţa, Cristina Puşcaşu, and Anca Silvia Dumitriu (president of the Romanian Society of Periodontology).
There was also a session with short (10 minute) case presentations on subjects including the role of smoking in periodontal diseases, the importance of microbiological tests in advanced periodontitis, and laser therapy in patients with gingivitis associated with dental plaque.
The speakers in this session included established periodontal specialists (Marina Giurgiu, Dorin Nicole Gheorghe, and Ana Giura) along with young specialists and postgraduate students (Stefana Popa, Ilea Alexandra, Tudor Grou, Cristina Vitalus, and Andrei Neamtu).
The hands-on workshop, led by Professor Dumitriu and Dr. Paunica, focused on periodontal surgical techniques and use of guided bone regeneration, sutures, and the protection of the surgical wound.
About 150 participants took part in the conference and workshop, held in Bucharest from October 4 to 6.
