Irish perio society holds annual scientific conference with focus on periodontal regeneration
Guest speaker Prof Mariano Sanz and ISP president Dr Ronan Allen
The Irish Society of Periodontology hosted its annual scientific conference in Dublin on October 8, at which the guest speaker was Prof Mariano Sanz, chairman of the EFP Perio Workshop, who discussed key aspects of periodontal regeneration.
In the morning, Prof Sanz covered detailed aspects of biology and wound healing around periodontal defects and the science behind the use of biologics and bone-graft materials in regeneration.
After lunch, there was a lively discussion involving clinical cases and participants enjoyed the opportunity of asking the visiting speaker, who is professor of periodontology at the Complutense University in Madrid, about recent developments in periodontal regenerative techniques.
The scientific meeting, in the Westin Hotel, was attended by about 30 people and was followed by the Irish perio society’s AGM which decided to take a more active role in the EFP’s European Day of Periodontology (which is celebrated on May 12).
The society plans to use this event to enhance the awareness of periodontitis through media, medical, and dental channels to “try to create a more robust national message for both the public and other healthcare professionals,” said Dr Ronan Allen, president of the society.
In addition, it plans to upgrade its website to enhance patient knowledge and the understanding of periodontitis. The meeting also discussed the forthcoming EFP Perio Master Clinic, which takes place in Malta in March 2017 devoted to the topic of peri-implantitis, which Dr Allen said “would be of interest to our members.”
Summing up the event, he said: “The meeting was well attended and hopefully well received, and I think everyone really enjoyed the day. The venue, calibre of speaker and the small group setting created a really pleasant environment for open debate about current and future technologies in periodontal surgical therapy.”
