European Gum Health Day 2018:
‘Health begins with healthy gums’
European Gum Health Day 2018 on May 12 will seek to raise public awareness of the importance of periodontal health to general health.
Using the slogan “Health begins with healthy gums,” the EFP and its 30 affiliated national societies of periodontology will organise events and media activities to highlight the importance of healthy gums.
About European Gum Health Day
European Gum Health Day is an international awareness day held on May 12, whose aim is to increase public awareness of the seriousness of gum disease, the health problems associated with it, and the importance of maintaining healthy gums.
“European Gum Health Day 2018 aims to remind people that – even if still often overlooked – gum health is a key factor for general health throughout life, and that gum disease is a relevant public-health concern because it is linked to very serious conditions, including heart disease and cerebrovascular disease,” says Xavier Struillou, co-ordinator of European Gum Health Day 2018.
“Gum health can help us to save many lives, to detect or prevent many severe conditions, and to save billions in medical costs.”
European Gum Health Day 2018 is the fifth EFP-promoted annual awareness day organised by the national perio societies.
Last year’s event, which used the slogan “Fighting periodontal disease together,” was a huge success: 27 of the EFP-affiliated national societies participated, organising a wide range of public-awareness activities, offering free periodontal screenings, and generating a large amount of media coverage.
The EFP has produced a variety of materials for the national societies to use for the events that they are organising for May 12. These include posters, logos, graphics, and press releases that can be freely used, translated and adapted to local needs. There is also a PowerPoint presentation template with sections on European Gum Health Day 2018, gum health and gum disease, and on the EFP and the national societies.
As part of the European Gum Health Day 2018 campaign, health professionals will be encouraged to sign and disseminate the EFP Manifesto: Perio and General Health, a call to action for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of gum disease.
The national societies will also use the awareness day to draw attention to the “Perio Focus” paper, a call for global action on the impact of the global burden of periodontal diseases on health, nutrition and wellbeing of mankind, which has been endorsed by the EFP and more than 50 international and national societies of periodontology.
