Why join Gum Health Day on May 12?
Created 12 years ago to increase public awareness of the negative impact of gum disease and the serious health problems associated with it, Gum Health Day aims to highlight to the general public that gum health is a key factor for overall health throughout life.
It also aims to remind the public that gum disease is a relevant public-health concern because it is associated with major systemic and/or chronic health issues including diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.
Led by the European Federation of Periodontology, the initiative is expected to grow into a global movement promoting prevention, early detection, and evidence-based oral healthcare. In 2026, Gum Health Day marks the launch of a new three-year awareness campaign under the motto “Gum Health Day: empowering lives.”
