The EFP warmly congratulates Professor Andreas Stavropoulos, EFP treasurer and former EFP president, on being named the recipient of the 2025 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Periodontal Disease.

Bestowed by the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR), this prestigious award recognises and stimulates outstanding achievements in periodontal research and its clinical translation. It is considered among the highest honours in dental research.

The award was formally presented during the IADR’s 103rd General Session and IADR Pan European Regional Congress, which took place in Barcelona, Spain, from 25 to 28 June 2025.

Andreas Stavropoulos is Professor of Periodontology at Malmö University in Sweden. His research is broad, from periodontal/peri-implant wound healing to peri-implant diseases, and more recently to the perio-systemic link. A prolific author and regular reviewer for several top journals, he is also the senior editor-in-chief of Clinical and Experimental Dental Research.

Trained as a dentist in Germany and Greece, Prof. Stavropoulos earned his PhD and dr. odont. degrees at Aarhus University, Denmark, based on extensive studies in periodontal regeneration and the use of biomaterials in periodontology and implant dentistry. He has received numerous awards, including the Anthony Rizzo Young Investigator Award of the IADR (2006), the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO) Basic Research Prize (2011), and the IADR Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine (2013).

“This recognition is a great honour for me, as it comes from an organisation representing the global dental research community. I am truly humbled. It obliges one to just continue and work harder!” said Stavropoulos.

He joins a distinguished line of EFP members to receive this award, including Lior Shapira, Iain Chapple, Anton Sculean, and Nikos Donos who have also served on the federation’s executive committee.

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease underlines the global impact of scientific work in periodontology of EFP leadership members, shaping the future of the field.
