Dental and periodontal professionals gathered in the scenic mountain town of Špindlerův Mlýn for Perio Days, organised by the Czech Society of Periodontology on 25 and 26 April 2025. The meeting offered a rich programme of expert presentations, live demonstrations, and collaborative discussions, drawing attendees from across the country and beyond.
Friday highlights: innovations and emergencies
Doctor Ueli Grunder (University of Zurich, Switzerland) opened the event with a compelling lecture on Bone and soft tissue augmentations around implants and teeth in the aesthetic zone. He shared advanced surgical techniques, explaining the indications for each and how to avoid common complications. Focus was given to soft-tissue procedures such as roll flaps, pedicle flaps, inlay grafts, full flaps, and tunnel techniques, and the selection of optimal graft harvest sites. Dr Grunder emphasised that preoperative planning is key to success. For bone substitution, he recommended a mixture of autologous and allograft materials combined with PRF, typically stabilised with non-resorbable membranes, pins, or screws.
Next, Doctor Prokop Seif (First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague) addressed Emergencies not only in ambulatory offices. His lecture covered life-saving protocols for anaphylaxis, allergic reactions, and sudden collapses in dental settings. Adrenaline was stressed as the first-line emergency treatment, with corticoids and antihistamines as secondary options. Dr Seif also provided practical demonstrations and video analyses of emergency scenarios.

Saturday sessions: oral pathology and teamwork
Saturday began with Doctor Vladimíra Radochová (Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Hradec Králové) discussing the Differential diagnosis of common oral mucosal diseases. She highlighted the importance of thorough patient history, since mucosal symptoms can reflect systemic conditions such as acute myeloid leukaemia, Crohn’s disease, and anaemia. Common and severe conditions were reviewed, including aphthous lesions, oral lichen planus, candidiasis, pemphigus, and carcinoma.
Doctor Jana Vašáková (Medical Faculty, Charles University, Prague) followed with a presentation on Teeth autotransplantation. She explained proper indications and contraindications, stressing the importance of patient selection, diagnostics (OPG, 3D imaging), and documentation. Endodontic treatment timing and articulation checks were covered in detail, with case studies demonstrating success in complex cleft palate patients.
The vital collaboration between dental hygienists and periodontists was highlighted by Doctor Daniel Svoboda (private practice, Roudnice nad Labem). Using the MINST protocol as an example, he illustrated how teamwork ensures successful periodontitis treatment, particularly in stages II–IV. He cautioned against isolated DH practices without specialist support, which limit feedback and long-term success.
The meeting closed with Doctor Jiří Krug (Prague), who presented solutions for extensive tooth loss, comparing implants, adhesive ceramic bridges, and autotransplantation. He explained when alternatives to implants are preferable and presented clinical cases that showcased the value of proper diagnostics, CBCT imaging, and tissue augmentation using the Vista and Khoury techniques.
The next Czech Perio Days will take place on 3 and 4 October 2025 in Mikulov, with Prof. Giulio Rasperini (University of Milan) as the keynote speaker.
