EFP Digital Innovation Award 2025: creative solutions for gum health
Categories:Clinical Practice, Institutional

The EFP has announced the winners of the EFP Digital Innovation Award 2025, a prestigious annual prize that recognises cutting-edge digital projects designed to improve gum health globally. The award, supported by EFP partner Haleon, highlights the critical role of technology in shaping the future of oral healthcare and is presented across three categories: innovation for the public, for dental professionals, and for researchers.
In its latest edition, the 2025 award attracted 20 submissions from 17 national societies affiliated with the EFP, reflecting the increasing momentum behind digital transformation in periodontology. The winners were selected by an international expert jury composed of Professor James Deschner (chair), Professor David Herrera, Professor Andreas Stavropoulos, Professor Mervi Gürsoy, and Professor Ioannis Polyzois.

Meizi Eliezer and Stefan-Ioan Stratul from Timisoara, Romania, received the first prize for their outstanding project Perio Predict, a periodontal charting and diagnostic platform that streamlines how dental professionals assess and manage gum disease. It leverages voice recognition and image analysis, whilst allowing manual intervention to control input to automate periodontal charting, classify disease severity, and even predict treatment outcomes using advanced algorithms and evidence-based analysis.
From Taiwan, Pei-Hsuan Chiang and Po-Chun Tseng were awarded second prize for Perio Trust, an AI-powered platform designed to transform dentist-patient communication. The application uses validated domain knowledge and large language models (LLMs) to generate educational materials and personalised reports for each appointment. This approach leads to better understanding, trust, and treatment compliance and outcomes. The platform integrates with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, uses speech recognition and multilingual translation, and produces personalized output fine-tuned for each clinician.

Third prize went to Anca Laura Constantin from Bucharest, Romania, for Perioskoup, an innovative digital tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to support both patients and clinicians in managing oral health. Designed to strengthen the patient–clinician relationship, it provides personalised at-home assistance based on each individual’s treatment plan, medical history, and specific oral health needs. Patients gain a sense of control and trust by having 24/7 access to tailored guidance, making them more likely to follow oral hygiene instructions correctly. For clinicians, Perioskoup saves chairside time, improves efficiency, and enables personalised care even for non-periodontal specialists.

Launched by the EFP in collaboration with Haleon, the Digital Innovation Award promotes forward-thinking projects that harness digital technologies to tackle challenges in gum health. The award seeks to inspire innovation at every level—empowering patients, equipping dentists, and enabling researchers to work more efficiently and effectively.
Prof. James Deschner, chair of the jury, noted the impressive range and quality of this year’s submissions: “It’s exciting to see how rapidly digital innovation is taking root in periodontology. This year’s winners have combined creativity with scientific insight to produce tools that can make a real difference in daily practice and public health. The future of gum care is digital, and these projects show us just how promising that future is.”
Doctor Steve Mason, Global Medical Lead Oral Health at Haleon, said “I was proud to present these awards at EuroPerio11. It is impressive to see the development and speed of digital evolution within periodontology, and how it is driving change in patients’ gum health. The support digital can offer OHCPs to facilitate chairside interventions, as well as how it can support the patient with tailored guidance, is fantastic. I know these digital solutions will continue to grow and I am looking forward to seeing how these are developed further.”
By supporting these initiatives, the EFP and Haleon continue to encourage the integration of digital solutions into everyday periodontal care.
