EFP launches infographics on peri-implant disease treatment

The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has released three new infographics to support dental professionals in interpreting and implementing its S3-level clinical practice guideline on the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases. These visual tools summarise key evidence-based recommendations and provide clear, practical guidance for protecting peri-implant health and optimising long-term implant success.

Developed by the EFP’s Workshop Committee, the infographics cover the full continuum of care: from patient selection and treatment planning to long-term supportive care following peri-implantitis treatment.

The first infographic addresses interventions aimed at preventing the development of peri-implant diseases before and immediately after implant placement. It includes recommendations for patients awaiting implants, treatment planning for 3D implant positioning, prosthetic treatment planning, assessment of peri-implant health status, and the role of soft-tissue augmentation in preventing disease onset.

The second infographic outlines treatment strategies for peri-implant mucositis, including general recommendations for managing mucositis and interventions regarding oral hygiene and non-surgical therapy.

The third infographic illustrates treatment strategies for peri-implantitis and suggests endpoints for both non-surgical and surgical management of peri-implantitis. It focuses on maintaining peri-implant health and preventing disease recurrence after initial treatment with mechanical, chemical and physical cleaning It also considers adjunctive therapies and explains reconstructive approaches.

Each infographic is colour-coded for clarity:

• Blue indicates recommended interventions based on strong evidence
• Orange highlights open recommendations, where the clinician’s judgement is essential due to limited evidence
• Red marks non-recommended or discouraged actions

These new tools are designed to support clinical decision-making and promote best practices for preserving peri-implant tissue health and ensuring the complication-free survival of dental implants.
