Porto programme joins network of EFP-accredited postgraduate programmes

The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has recognized the Specialization in Periodontology and Oral Implantsat the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Porto (FMDUP), Portugal, as an EFP-accredited postgraduate programme in periodontology. The recognition further strengthens the EFP's network of accredited programmes, which promote high standards in specialist education across Europe.

The three-year, full-time programme combines advanced theoretical education with extensive pre-clinical and clinical training, preparing graduates to diagnose and manage periodontal and peri-implant diseases, perform regenerative and mucogingival surgery, and provide implant therapy. The curriculum also places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment planning, research, and the development of teaching and knowledge-transfer skills.

Directed by Professor Ricardo Faria Almeida, the programme comprises 180 ECTS credits and more than 4,800 hours of learning, including lectures, laboratory sessions, supervised clinical practice, and independent study. It is also certified by the Portuguese Dental Association, enabling graduates to access the national board of specialists in periodontology.

The faculty includes experienced academics and clinicians from Porto, supported by an international group of invited lecturers from across Europe, reflecting the programme's strong commitment to scientific excellence and international collaboration.

EFP accreditation recognises postgraduate programmes that meet the federation's rigorous educational standards in curriculum, clinical training, faculty expertise, research, and quality assurance. The accreditation process helps ensure consistent, high-quality specialist education while promoting mobility and collaboration between centres across Europe.
