EFP Postgraduate Symposium 2024: connecting minds, cultures, and the future of periodontology

The 2024 EFP Postgraduate Symposium, held in September in the Netherlands, was an unforgettable event that united postgraduate students, programme directors, and faculty from EFP-accredited schools worldwide. This biennial gathering showcased the clinical and research achievements of emerging periodontal leaders and offered students their first opportunity to present their work on an international stage.

The event kicked off on September 5 with an interesting visit to the Philips factory in the North of Holland, where the group toured the facility responsible for producing the Sonicare toothbrush. It was a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the cutting-edge technology shaping daily oral care—a perfect introduction to the scientific discussions that would unfold.

Afterward, participants made their way to Ermelo, a charming town nestled in the Dutch countryside. In the tranquil surroundings of a picturesque hotel, the heart of the symposium came to life. Over the next two days, postgraduate students from around the globe took center stage, presenting their best clinical cases. Each EFP-accredited programme invited one student to present their work, providing a valuable opportunity to discuss complex cases with peers and mentors.

The diversity of topics reflected the depth of knowledge being cultivated in the next generation of periodontists. From advanced clinical treatments to the management of patients with systemic comorbidities, the presentations sparked engaging discussions that highlighted the global talent in the room and underscored the importance of scientific discourse in shaping the future of periodontology.

But it wasn’t all about the work. The symposium also offered plenty of opportunities to relax and bond. After lunch, many participants could be found unwinding on the lush green lawns of the hotel, taking in the peaceful surroundings, and sharing ideas in a more casual atmosphere. These moments of calm were a perfect counterbalance to the intensity of the presentations and discussions, allowing deeper connections to form. One of the more memorable aspects of the symposium was the buffet, which provided a delightful array of international cuisines. It quickly turned into a friendly contest of food cultures, with attendees exchanging notes on the best dishes from their countries.

A highlight of the event was the announcement of the EFP Digital Innovation Awards, sponsored by MIS and Philips. These awards recognize groundbreaking advancements in digital technologies within periodontology, emphasizing the role of innovation in shaping the future of dental care. This was an exciting reminder of the symposium focus on integrating new technologies into our clinical practice and educational frameworks.

As the symposium came to a close, it was clear that it had been a resounding success. It provided a valuable platform for students to present their work, learn from one another, and foster a sense of camaraderie that transcended borders. The event not only celebrated academic excellence but also highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in the future of periodontology.

And, as with any event of this caliber, the fun didn’t end with the final presentation. The evening brought out the lighter side of things—after a glass (or two) of wine and beer, the academic discussions naturally gave way to a lively and spontaneous sing-along. Laughter filled the terrace as students, professors, and directors joined in, their voices blending together in a joyful celebration of new friendships and shared experiences.
