Categories:Events, Institutional

The British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP) marked Gum Health Day 2025 with a nationwide contest that drew a wide range of creative entries and strong engagement from dental professionals, dental hospital teams, undergraduate students, and the wider community in the UK.
Held in May to coincide with the international Gum Health Day campaign led by the EFP, the contest highlighted the commitment of the BSP to raising public awareness of the importance of gum health. Participants submitted projects across several categories, ranging from team initiatives to student projects and community-based activities, all reflecting this year’s campaign theme: “Gums rock! Keep smiling!”
Prizes were awarded to winners in each category, including Dental Health Club (Best Team Entry), Dr Dhroov Thanki (Best Individual Entry), Hafsa Khan & Aamina Bashir from Bristol Dental School (Best Student Entry), Guys Hospital Department of Periodontology and the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry (Best Hospital-based Entries), Ana Gamboa from the University of Bristol (Best Project in the Community), and Hollie Nend & Frances Hodson (Patient Forum Choice Award).
Professor Nicola West, president of the BSP, said: “We are delighted with the overwhelming response to our Gum Health Day contest. The creativity and enthusiasm shown by all participants demonstrate how powerful local initiatives can be in engaging the public and spreading the vital message that gum health is essential to overall health and wellbeing. We encourage our colleagues to take inspiration from this and to join the EFP in celebrating Gum Health Day in their own countries.”
Gum Health Day serves as an annual milestone in the EFP’s year-round campaign to communicate how essential gum health is to overall wellbeing. “We use Gum Health Day to focus and amplify ongoing work by our professional community,” said Dr Tali Chackartchi, EFP officer and coordinator of Gum Health Day 2025. “The BSP’s campaign shows how national societies are constantly finding creative, responsible ways to translate science into everyday actions, keeping the message fresh, practical, and impactful.”
The BSP contest serves as an excellent example of how national societies can amplify the impact of Gum Health Day to inspire both the dental community and the public to protect their gum health and …keep smiling!
