Tel Aviv University postgraduate programme receives EFP accreditation

The Postgraduate Periodontology Residency Programme at the Tel Aviv University’s Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine has received EFP accreditation, returning to the EFP’s international network of accredited postgraduate programmes in periodontology. There are currently 26 accredited dental schools providing the EFP postgraduate programme, and this number increases every year.

The programme prepares residents to practice periodontics and implant dentistry at specialist level, with a particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary management of complex perio-prosthetic cases. Close collaboration between periodontology, prosthodontics and orthodontics enables residents to follow patients from diagnosis and periodontal and implant therapy through to final rehabilitation.

The four-year programme in Tel Aviv University combines extensive clinical training with theoretical teaching and research. It includes rotations in oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery, while residents conduct research throughout their training, including a dedicated six-month period focused on research and basic science.

Clinical training covers the full range of non-surgical and surgical periodontal and implant procedures, including regenerative techniques, guided bone regeneration and complex implant placement. Each resident also undertakes a basic or clinical research project, with the results intended for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

The programme is directed by Dr Ilan Beitlitum, with Dr Michal Halperin-Sternfeld as co-director. It admits two to four residents every two years, beginning in September, with teaching conducted in Hebrew and English.

EFP-accredited postgraduate programmes are required to meet common quality standards covering their programme directors, training programmes, facilities and periodontal services. Accreditation provides programmes and their students with access to an international postgraduate network, supports exchanges between accredited universities and represents international peer recognition.
