Nicola West
Professor Nicola West is a graduate of the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff). After attaining her fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Nicola gained her PhD from the University of Wales in 1995, on dentine hypersensitivity and tooth surface loss. Nicola is Professor of Restorative Dentistry (Periodontology) and Director of the Bristol Clinical Trials Unit at Bristol Dental School, University of Bristol (UK). She conducts research in the international forum, attracting substantial funding from industry, charities and NIHR funding streams. Current research interests are investigating the associations between periodontal and systemic diseases and conditions.
Nicola lectures regularly in the national and international forum, served as the president of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP) in 2025 following being BSP secretary from 2013- 2020 and EFP BSP delegate 2013-2019.
In addition to her longstanding service to the BSP, Nicola served as EFP secretary general from 2019 to 2025 and as treasurer of EuroPerio10. Since 1990, Nicola has maintained a thriving private referral practice in Bristol undertaking specialist periodontal treatment, hard and soft tissue augmentation and dental implant placement. Nicola’s particular sphere of interest includes the management of peri-implantitis lesions.
