This perio classification is the product of the World Perio Workshop on the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions, held in Chicago, US in November 2017. This workshop was jointly organised jointly by the EFP and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) to agree on a renewed consensus knowledge base behind a groundbreaking classification to be used globally.
This revised perio classification updates the previous scheme of gum diseases formulated back in 1999. The research papers and consensus reports of the World Perio Workshop were published simultaneously in June 2018 in the EFP’s Journal of Clinical Periodontology and the AAP’s Journal of Periodontology. This updated, global classification was oficially presented by the two organisations at the EuroPerio9 congress in Amsterdam in June 2018.
The EFP has developed a toolkit to assist periodontists and other dental professionals in implementing this groundbreaking perio classification in their daily practice. The toolkit comprises: guidance notes, slide presentations, infographics, and videos, as well as the consensus reports from the World Perio Workshop.
Clinical guidelines
In accordance with the approach behind the perio classification, the EFP works in a set of evidence-based clinical guidelines on the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implant diseases.
