19th European Workshop on Periodontology ‘Education in Periodontology in Europe’

Fifteen years after the first European consensus workshop on Periodontal Education which took place in 2009; a new group was tasked with creating new guidelines incorporating the most recent research and the 2018 classification system, rendering it relevant to modern teaching in the field of Periodontology.

Largely speaking the workshop was split into 4 working groups each tasked with assessing a different level of teaching. They included

Working group 1: (WG1) Undergraduate dental education in Periodontology in Europe.

Working group 2: (WG2) Specialist training in Periodontology.

Working group 3: (WG3) CPD and vocational education and training.

Working group 4: (WG4) Education methods.

Of particular interest to Alumni may be the work of WG2, in looking to update the competences and learning outcomes and their evaluation, educational methods and education quality assurance for the training of contemporary specialists in Periodontology.

This included assessing the impact of the 2018 classification guidelines on postgraduate programmes.

Interestingly the results of the working group showed that graduates from EFP programmes overall evaluated their training positively; although there was a potential need for more surgical training when it comes to mucogingival and surgical procedures related to implants.
