Although each University and Dental School may have different approaches to education and training influenced by structures, cultures and resources, the postgraduate programmes in Periodontology follow the same curricular structure in a competence-based curriculum, in order to provide the necessary harmonisation of periodontal training (Van der Velden and Sanz 2010).

The Postgraduate Education Committee (PEC) encourages more universities to seek accreditation by the EFP and wants to promote student mobility schemes (EFP 2006).

There are currently 23 accredited dental schools providing the EFP Postgraduate Programme in Periodontology and this number increases every year.
