Our program is blessed with an excellent faculty / resident ratio of one to one. All our faculty are dedicated to the program only as we do not have an undergraduate program. The small size of the school allow for intimate interaction with faculty and fellow residents in the other programs at the school. The program is situated in a large level I trauma center and tertiary referral hospital that allows us access and interaction with cutting-edge medical knowhow and treatment. This also allows the residents access to residents in other fields of medicine for clinical and research purposes. Social activities among the students are extra-curricular and welcomed events. On top of it we are taking an annual field trip that involves site seeing and physical excesise with a varying degree of difficulty (offered free of charge but not mandatory)

Theoretical component

Each day starts with 2 hours of seminars. These includesclassical literature of both periodontology and implantdentistry and currentliterature. Dedicated topic oriented seminars a given monthly. Additional seminarsincludes special topics in medicine (weekly–guest lecturers) andspecial topics indentistry (presented by the residents of all the post-graduate programs in the school).Practical components: Students are trained in all the surgical and non-surgical aspectsof periodontal and implant dentistry. Students are assigned ~ 30 patients to betreated from A to Z and additional "per procedure" patients as deems necessary. Theyare expected to complete sufficient number of each procedure including implantplacement, sinus augmentation, all regenerative aspects of modern periodontics andimplant dentistry. The students are exposed to a vast variety of materials andmethods.All the residents are trained to provide treatment underconscious sedation,deep sedation and under general anesthesia as well (in the large OR). We work closelywith our anesthesiology department that provides these services for our faculty andresidents.Twice weekly, a clinical case review session is being given by the residentsto present their clinical achievement and discuss future progress. This seminar is beingattended by al the senior faculty of the department with additional consulting facultyfrom the other departments.

Research component

We offer both basic science research project in our bone regeneration laboratory or clinical research projects. We encourage the residents to get involved in the project early in their training in order to be able to bring it to fruition before graduation. All residents are required to publish their research results in peer-review journals. To that end, we employ a full time research coordinator to run the daily operation of clinical research in the department.

Evaluation component

All students are monitored on a daily basis. At the end of the day, we have a meeting to discuss the events of the day to draw on these experiences (success and failure alike). Once a month there is a short exam on theoretical aspects of the studies. Once a year we have an annual exam that includes all aspects of periodontology and implant dentistry. A quarterly one on one meeting with the chairman / programme director is done to asses progress and fine tune the educational process of every resident.
